By their well meaning friends, doctors and therapists that anxiety is a cognitive thinking issue.
Let me take a minute and tell you about a client of mine. She was seriously struggling with anxious thoughts and panic attacks.

Needless to say, it isn't a very effective approach, and it never was.
Despite all her hard work, her efforts, and the amount of reading she’d done on anxiety, she STILL struggled to make any long term progress.

Although doctors and therapists mean well, their advice may not only fail to get you the results you need, but could actually be harming your progress.
When anxiety takes hold, your mind and body enter survival mode, a state where your conscious, cognitive mind is rendered powerless.
In survival mode, no amount of logical reasoning can snap you out of it because your prefrontal cortex; the rational, conscious cognitive part of your brain, is offline.
The challenge lies in the fact that most traditional therapies solely focus on the conscious, cognitive mind, like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and talk therapy.
These approaches aim to address your conscious, rational mind—the part that chooses what to think. If anxiety was a matter of conscious control, you would simply choose to think differently and it would go away.
Now you didn't choose these thoughts and shouldn't feel guilty for having them.
Anxiety happens outside of your control. You can even know you're safe and the thoughts are irrational yet your body still responds with anxious thoughts and feelings.
It triggers a survival response in your body. When this happens, the rational thinking part of your brain disconnects, giving way to the automatic fight/flight/freeze system, regardless of actual danger.
Whats even worse is that talk therapy and CBT can make things worse as they can bring feelings up to the surface and trigger you, but might not be trained to hold space and co-regulate your nervous system back to safety.

I never set out to become an anxiety specialist. Initially I just wanted to stop the panic attacks I was experiencing. I didn't even recognise I was experiencing anxiety until I went to A&E thinking I was having a heart attack for them to tell me I was experiencing anxiety and having a panic attack.
This lead me to committing to finding a solution and the deeper I dug, the more I realised anxiety was just a surface level problem. I experimented with every therapy I could find. Some helped more than others and lead me to qualifying in different somatic and trauma focused therapies.
